Hayoung Lee is a Korean furniture designer and artist, currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

She earned her BFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design at Hongik University, Seoul, Korea, and also achieved MFA in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design in 2017. She was selected as shortlist of WGSN + Arts Thread Future Creator Award and RADO Star Prize US, also received a best student designer prize judged by NYCxDESIGN and Interior Design Magazine. Her work has been widely exhibited, most recently at WantedDesign Manhattan and Sotheby's.

Lee examines how to materialize and preserve past time through assimilating her work with abstract motif from geological substances—strata, fossils, minerals and meteorites—that both naturally occur, trap moments, and preserve past memories transcending time and space. Lee’s art techniques have been inspired by ‘Biophilia Hypothesis’, human’s inborn tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Likewise, the motivation emerged from practice of mirroring natural formation processes which guides her to create objects with natural and organic form that further evolve into functional sculptures.

Her ‘Strata Stool Series’ adopts a stratification framework that piles up everyday objects embedded with personal life history which are unconventional yet familiar materials to work with. ‘Amber Series’ of transparent, glowing objects employ epoxy resin in an alternative use of natural resin to conjure properties of amber which can trap and crystalize temporary moments.
